Learn to Locate Yourself on a Map

Navigation is one of the most important skills in adventure racing. Good navigation helps athletes stay on the correct route, save time, and make smart decisions during the race.

In adventure racing, knowing where you are is more important than how fast you are. If you can’t locate yourself on the map, you can’t move in the right direction.

Here’s how to do it simply and smartly.

1) Stop and Observe

First, stop moving. Look around carefully.

Notice big features like:

  • Hills or slopes

  • Rivers, Lakes or streams

  • Roads or trails

  • Buildings, villages, or towers

These are called landmarks. They help you match the ground with the map.

2) Align Your Map with the Compass

Place your compass on the map and turn the map until it matches the real direction (north with north). Now the map is aligned with your location, making it easier to understand.

3) Match Landmarks to the Map

Find the same features you see around you on the map.

For example: If there is a river on your left and a hill on your right, look for that same pattern on the map. This helps narrow down your location.

4) Check Distance and Direction

Think about:

  • How far you have traveled from the last checkpoint

  • In which direction you traveled

Use this information to estimate where you might be on the map.

5) Relocate if Unsure

If you’re confused, don’t guess. Move carefully to a clear feature like a trail, bend in a road, or stream junction. These “big features” make it much easier to pinpoint your position.

The key is simple: Stop. Observe. Think. Connect.
