Adventure Racing is a multidisciplinary team sport that combines multiple outdoor disciplines such as trail running, trekking, kayaking, cycling on unmarked wilderness courses with races extending anywhere from two hours up to two weeks in length.  Athletes must navigate their way between checkpoints using a map and compass from start to finish.

Race duration depends on the category. Typical formats include: Discovery Adventure Races: 2–5 hours Challenge Adventure Races: 5–12 hours Endurance Adventure Races: 12–48 hours Expedition Adventure Races: 48 hours up to 10 days
