TEAM FORMAT

  • Teams of 4 members of any combination – (males and/or females)

  • Only mixed teams of four with at least one member being female will be eligible to win the free entry for the ARWS World Championship in 2027 and for ARWS ranking points.

ROUTE

  • Route is linear, and teams need to pass through all control points (CP) and transitions (T).

  • There may be legs where controls can be visited in any order. These will be identified in the route book.

  • Teams that miss any CPs or transition areas will be ranked behind teams that visit all control points and transitions.

  • Route book, logistical planner, and route flow chart will be released one month before the event.

DISTANCE

  • Total distance: approximately 400 km.

  • Mountain biking 60 %

  • Trekking 30 %

  • Kayaking 10 %

  • First team expected to finish in three days, last team in five days.

  • All teams will be able to finish before the Friday night awards ceremony.

TRANSITIONS

  • Transition facilities, such as medical staff, toilets, drinking water, hot water, electricity, restaurant, and/or sleeping facilities are indicated in the leg summary section of the Route Book.

DISCIPLINES

  • Mountain biking – teams should be prepared for a range of riding, including single track, steep hills, gravel roads, and sealed roads.

  • Trekking – will involve traveling by foot through rugged and diverse terrain. 

  • Kayaking – will involve river kayaking on moving water with level 1 - 3 rapids. All dangerous rapids will be staffed to ensure teams portage rapids. Most rapids have an opportunity for teams to portage around if the teams do not feel they have the competency to run the rapid.

  • Orienteering – orienteering is an essential part of the race. The course is not marked, and teams are required to navigate using maps. 

  • Ropework – teams will abseil and do a zipline.

MAPS

  • Maps supplied will be 1:50,000 topographical maps – A3 size.

  • Each team will receive two sets of maps.

  • Teams receive maps for each leg at the transition at the start of each leg.

  • Copy checkpoints and transition from the master maps as the Expedition progresses.

  • Google Maps may also be supplied for navigation on certain legs.

  • Waterproofing of maps is essential. A4 zip-lock bags are recommended.

  • Stationary to prepare the route on the map is needed. Assorted colours pens, sellotape, scissors, etc, are recommended.

  • Maps will not be replaced if team misplaces maps.

RE-SUPPLY BAGS

  • The organisers will provide teams with four re-supply bags (Bag A, Bag B, Bag C & Bag D)

  • Teams will need to plan all their equipment and sustenance and then pack them into their re-supply bags.

  • Size of the re-supply bag is 80 litres.

  • Only bags supplied by the organisers may be used; teams cannot use their own re-supply bags.

  • The organisers will move these bags to designated transition areas on route.

CYCLES

  • The official cycle partner is (TBA)

  • Please get in touch with them directly at (To be announced soon) for any cycle-related questions and/or if you require any spares or cycling-related products.

  • Cycle repairs will be available at registration and at all relevant cycle transitions.

CYCLE BOXES

  • Teams must provide their own waterproof cycle boxes (no cardboard boxes) for cycle transport.

  • Maximum dimensions allowed: 1400 x 800 x 300 mm (NO EXCEPTIONS)

  • Maximum weight limit for one packed cycle box is 30 kg.

  • The cycle boxes must have handles on the sides to enable the volunteers to carry them.

  • The organisers will transport the cycles from transition to transition.

KAYAKS

  • Teams will be provided with two plastic sit-on-top double kayaks.

  • Teams must provide their own life jackets, personal flotation devices (PFD)

  • Teams must provide their paddles. Ensure it is packed in a protective bag so it is not damaged in transit.

KAYAK BAG

  • Teams must provide their own kayak bag (one bag per team only)

  • The kayak bag must be sealable and have enough space for 4 PFDs and four wetsuits or drysuits.
