India’s Historic Debut in Orienteering World Rankings

India is proud to announce a significant milestone in Indian orienteering. In our recent participation at a prestigious world-ranking event in Singapore, two of our athletes represented India with grit and determination. This event, known for its challenging courses and elite global competition, marked India’s first foray into the world-ranking system for orienteering. Both athletes showcased remarkable perseverance, completing the races under demanding conditions and bringing honor to the nation.

Organized by "Orienteering Association Singapore" the event in Singapore, had 2 events in 2 days. The event was not just WORLD RANKED EVENT but also the concluding race of the ASEAN O-league and part of the Asian Cup.

The Founder - Orienteering Association Singapore, Eugene Chow says, "Thank you Team India (NthAdventure Orienteering Club) for your spontaneous participation to Singapore's first World Ranking Event (WRE). This event is part of the Asia Cup, a series of WRE organized by Asia federations to promote cross country exchange and excellence in sportsmanship. I would encourage your team to look out for the event promotions and participate in more orienteering events around the world in order to elevate the standards back home.

"Orienteering in Asia is a diverse market with our continent holding the 2nd largest number of federations in the IOF. However, not many federations are as active / or with ability to do the sport promotion and that creates power houses from the likes of China, Japan and Hong Kong. It is therefore our aim to try bridge those gaps and bring orienteering to other parts of Asia. One of the examples is the Asian Championships will be held in the Southeast Asia Country of Thailand for the first time" Eugene Chow added.

Eugene Chow also mentioned, "For Singapore, we are a small country with no funding for the sport. We started the association about 9 years ago and focuses in the area of using the sport as a tool for education. Today, orienteering is a compulsory module taught in our national schools, and we have since started a small national team to organize regular training with the aim of bringing home a gold medal in the year 2030. For the coming year, we will continue the work of sport promotion in the Asia region and also explore collaborations with sister organizations such as the Asian Games and SEA games to try and get a bigger exposure."

NthAdventure Orienteering Club (NOC) is proud to send their Indian Orienteers to the 2nd International orienteering event and to the First "IOF World Ranking Event". NOC Athletes Global Rankings are:

  • Rahul Verma, NOC Athlete successfully completed both races, earning 400 points and securing a global rank of 2737, Athlete LINK

  • Zarbaf Sharief, NOC Athlete secured 189 points and to earn a global rank of 2817.

Their efforts placed India on the world-ranking map for the very first time. This achievement is not just a testament to the talent and hard work of our athletes but also a proud moment for the club as we work to elevate the sport of orienteering in India.

‘Orienteering’ is a sport that involves using a map and compass to navigate swiftly and accurately between Control points in a variety of, frequently uncharted territory. A topographical map—typically an orienteering map—is provided to participants, who use it to locate control points. India is only now beginning to develop Top orienteers in a sport that has been around for over a century. Orienteering is the ideal sport for any age group to bring out the best in both mental and physical attributes, according to many academics and sports scientists worldwide.
