Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS) | Home for Adventure Racing

In a world where most sports are defined by speed or strength, there exists a global platform that demands something more—strategy, resilience, teamwork, and the courage to step into the unknown. Welcome to the Adventure Racing World Series (ARWS), widely known as the true “Home for Adventure Racing”

What is the Adventure Racing World Series?

The Adventure Racing World Series is the world’s leading platform for adventure racing, bringing together elite endurance athletes and passionate explorers across the globe. It connects over 80+ races across 6 continents, creating a truly international ecosystem for the sport.

But ARWS is not just a series—it’s a journey. From dense jungles and remote mountains to deserts and rivers, every race challenges participants to navigate, survive, and perform in some of the most extreme environments on Earth.

The Heart of Adventure Racing

Adventure racing under ARWS is a multi-discipline sport that combines:

  • Running

  • Trekking or Trail running

  • Mountain biking

  • Hike a Bike

  • Kayaking

  • Swimming

  • Navigation

  • Rope activities

  • Surprise activities and more

Teams, usually mixed-gender groups of four—must stay together and navigate through checkpoints without marked routes, making decision-making as important as physical endurance.

How the ARWS Structure Works

What makes ARWS truly powerful is its structured yet inclusive racing system. It creates a clear pathway for both beginners and elite athletes.

1. Qualifier Races – The Elite Gateway

Qualifier races are the backbone of the series and represent the purest form of adventure racing.

  • Duration: 5 to 10 days (non-stop)

  • Format: Expedition-style racing

  • Teams: Mixed teams of 4

The biggest reward? The top premier team earns a free entry into the annual Adventure Racing World Championship known as the pinnacle of Adventure Racing. These races demand everything—navigation skills, endurance, teamwork, and mental resilience.

2. Regional Races – The Entry Point

Regional races make adventure racing more accessible to everyone.

  • Duration: 1 day to 48 hours

  • Locations: Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, North & South America

These events are perfect for:

  • First-time participants

  • Amateur teams of 2, 3 & 4

  • Those building towards expedition racing

They serve as a steppingstone into the world of ARWS and eventually into Qualifiers and World Championships.

3. Stage Races – The Fast-Growing Format

Introduced in 2023, stage races are changing the landscape of adventure racing.

  • Multi-day events

  • Include overnight camps

  • Team of 2, 3 & 4

  • Relaxed structure compared to expedition races to let newbie explore the sport

This format is growing rapidly, making the sport more accessible without losing its adventurous edge.

The Ultimate Goal: AR World Championship

Every race in the series leads to one pinnacle event—the Adventure Racing World Championship.

Each year, a different country bid to host the championship, ensuring:

  • New terrains

  • Fresh challenges

  • Global diversity

Tformat keeps the competition exciting and unpredictable, truly testing the world’s best teams.

Rankings That Reflect True Performance

ARWS maintains a competitive structure through its ranking systems:

  • World Rankings: For premier teams competing in Qualifiers
